It's one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer: in Ontario, you don't need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. You can call us and book an assessment directly.
When a referral can still help
Even though the law doesn't require one, a referral is sometimes useful:
- Extended health benefits. Some workplace or private insurance plans will only reimburse physiotherapy if you have a doctor's note. Check your plan booklet or call your insurer before your first visit.
- Health spending accounts. Some accounts have their own rules about what paperwork they need.
- Ongoing medical care. If your doctor is already managing your condition, sharing their notes helps us coordinate your care.
Workplace and car accident injuries
If you were hurt at work or in a motor vehicle accident, your physiotherapy may be covered through a WSIB or auto insurance (MVA) claim. Bring your claim number if you have one. We work with these claims regularly and can help you understand the process.
